Man Shoots at Bat in Home with .38-cal. Revolver

Man Shoots at Bat in Home with .38-cal. Revolver

8/30/2010

Rarely would I advise against getting in a little wingshooting action, but, if you're reading this, Cedric R. Newton, 52, of Maplewood, Minn., I've gotta tell you something: Using a .38-caliber revolver to shoot at a bat flying around inside your home is probably a bad idea.

From the Minneapolis Star-Tribune:

By the time he was done shooting, a bat was wounded and an adjoining vacant townhouse had three bullet holes in its freshly painted walls, a dent in a metal closet door and a dent in the stove, according to charges filed Friday in Ramsey County District Court.

As a result, Cedric R. Newton, 52, has been charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, a felony. He will make his first court appearance Sept. 20.

A pellet gun sounds a little more reasonable to me. A .38 on the other hand? That's just asinine.

It is basic gun safety to be sure of what is beyond your target. My friend Tony had this happen last month, but he didn't panic (his wife did). Tony waited until it landed then used a pellet gun to exterminate the vermine. Since the pellet didn't exit the far side of the bat he didn't even scratch the paint on his wall with his one shot- one kill.
