Professional waterfowl hunter and call maker Jeff Foiles had maintained his innocence following his December 2010 indictment; however, evidently he decided the case against him was just too strong. On Thursday he pled guilty in U.S. District Court to two misdemeanor violations: unlawful sale of wildlife (Lacey Act violation) and unlawful taking of migratory game birds (Migratory Bird Treaty Act violation). Under the plea agreement, Foiles will serve 13 months in jail; pay a $100,000 fine; serve a year of supervised release; face a two-year suspension of hunting and guiding rights after his release from jail and, perhaps the most humiliating stipulation of all, make public service announcements proclaiming his guilt and encouraging others to follow game laws. Foiles' business, the Fallin’ Skies Strait Meat Duck Club, also faces penalties after pleading guilty to two felony charges: illegal sale of wildlife through illegal guided hunts and falsifying records. Foiles will be sentenced September 21. He still faces an indictment in Canada, which alleges, among other serious charges, that Foiles used bread to lure banded geese from a city park and shot them with a pellet gun to collect the bands. Now there's some good material for a PSA.
