Quest for 450: 444 Goes Down in Bama

May 04, 2012

Mike Pentecost had been taking care of some business and hunting out of his public-land turkey camp that he enjoys with a group of friends every year when cameraman Terry Sullivan made it back in town and started following Mike with the camera. On Terry’s first day back, the two of them checked out a piece of National Forest that had been recently burned in a prescribed condition. In fact, it was so recent; some stumps were still smoking and burning.

Quest for 450: Turkey Camp

Each season, Woodhaven Custom Calls’ Mike Pentecost takes time out of his travels to stay right at home and hunt for several weeks. Besides just hitting some public land not far from his home in Heflin, Ala., he joins up with a group of hardcore turkey hunters who camp out in the national forest for up to two weeks each spring. Here is Mike’s thoughts on the experience in his own words:

Quest for 450: Keys to The Afternoon Hunt for 443

April 27, 2012

When Mike shot his second gobbler while hunting with Spook Spann in Tennessee, it was a late afternoon hunt, which requires a different mindset and approach than when hunting gobbling birds in the morning.

After scoring a double with his host, Spook Spann, Mike Pentecost and Spook headed out the next day in search of Mike’s 443rd bird. They quickly located five gobblers in a field, determined the direction they were heading and set up ahead of them in a spot where a tree line ran up to the pond.

When Mike Pentecost and Spook Spann set up on the turkeys that would lead to the two scoring a double, it could have just as easily been a hunt that wasn’t.

Quest for 450: Number 442 in Tennessee

April 18, 2012

The week began ominously for hunter Mike Pentecost when one of his sons, 4-year-old Jacob, wound up in the hospital with pneumonia, forcing him to cancel plans to hunt in South Georgia on the way back from his successful Florida hunt. Mike now only needs nine more birds to achieve his goal of 450 turkeys before he hits the age of 50 at the end of May.

Quest for 450: 441 Falls in Second Day of Florida

April 11, 2012

Limited to just one bird a day in Florida, Mike Pentecost and his guide, Bobby Carraway, scouted out a group of gobblers the afternoon after killing No. 440. Watching the birds until they roost, the group made their plan for the next morning and returned to camp for a hearty dinner and a good night of sleep. The alarm will wake them early the next morning.

Quest for 450: Take a Break Hunting Tip

April 09, 2012

During the lull in hunting activity for Gobbler No. 441, Mike Pentecost and his crew used the down time in the field to snack and fill back up on fluids. Unlike a lot of big-game hunting, turkey hunting often takes place in warm or even downright hot weather, and not maintaining a good intake of fluids can run a hunter down and even be dangerous in extreme cases.

Quest for 450: Number 440 Falls

April 05, 2012

With everything finally lined up and in order, Mike Pentecost headed to Florida to “officially” begin his quest near Yeehaw Junction in Florida with Limestone Outfitters, which only runs a few clients on hunts a year. Mike is good friends with Limestone’s Bobby Carraway and the two have hunted together for several years.

Quest for 450: How Well Are You Hidden?

April 04, 2012

While driving to Florida to begin his quest, Mike Pentecost remembered something he had done the week before while hunting with a friend that he wanted to share with everyone following him.
