A male hiker was fatally attacked by a grizzly bear in Yellowstone National Park, marking the first bear-caused human fatality in the park since 1986.

The man and his wife were visiting the park and stumbled upon a female bear and her cubs on an early morning hike. Officials believe the bear attacked in defense of her cubs.

According to park spokesman Al Nash, bear attacks are extremely rare in the park, and no visitors were injured by bears in 2010.
