As important as it is to have the right guns and ammunition for the big hunt, it’s the edged tools that make all the difference once the game arrives back in camp. It only takes one trip into the wilderness with dull blades for a hunter to learn to love these simple implements. Here are a few edgy items available from Cheaper Than Dirt to consider taking along for your next outdoors event.
Buck makes more knives than you can shake a sharpener at. A classic model that's withstood the test of many years on the market is the Pathfinder. This 5-inch plain edge 420HC stainless steel modified clip-point blade offers an excellent balance of blade size and shape for a variety of tasks. The handle features a black Phenolic grip and a polished aluminum butt cap and finger guard. This knife arrives with a fitted black leather sheath and Buck's 4-Ever Unconditional Lifetime Warranty.
It's good to have a tried-and-true hunting knife on your hip when going after big game. But when you find yourself looking down at the carcass of a North American Elk, even the best knife may not be up to the task of carving that massive critter down to size. Meyerco USA has teamed up with Mossberg USA to bring you this 10-piece game butchering set that includes a tungsten carbide sharpener, game shears and a hard-sided carrying case.
Some of the toughest steel available can be found in modern hunting and utility knife blades. Lansky's 4-hone Diamond kit provides extra coarse to fine diamond stones for sharpening hard-steel blades. It's easy to maintain that all important sharpening angle using the provided guide rods and multi-angle knife clamp. Each of the hones is color coded for easy identification.
It happens more often than we'd like. After being in storage since the last hunt, a favorite knife or tool is unsheathed to reveal unsightly rust spots. The Lansky Eraser Block is just that, an eraser. Gently rubbing it against a spot of surface rust will quickly remove it. This mildly abrassive little block also comes in handy for cleaning ceramic knife sharpening rods.
The Kershaw Blade Trader system features the Quik-Lock mechanism to allow hunters to easily and safely trade out tools and blades from the non-slip handle. Each blade is constructed of quality steel matched to its specific application. All of the tools and blades fit into a leather sheath for easy carry. The Alaskan includes a combination gut hook/skinning blade, a hunting blade and a saw blade.
SOG's Spirit is an unusual tool that can fill multiple roles. With its nylon handle attached, it’s a sleek double-edged 4.25-inch fixed blade knife for cutting or throwing. Unscrew the handle and attach a broom handle or tree branch to convert it into a spear. The Spirit arrives with a nylon sheath and a set screw for attaching it to a handle.
The Swiss Army came up with a fantastic multi-bladed knife but a cork screw isn't very helpful when you need to swap out a choke tube. The Avid Multi-Tool, however, has all kinds of flip-out widgets that come in handy when hunting or target shooting with rifles and shotguns. A pin punch, scope windage and elevation adjuster and a multi-gauge choke wrench are just a few of the features this unique product has to offer. A Plus version is also available with a flashlight, case and Hex Bits.
Not all jobs can be successfully tackled with just a single sharp edge. For tasks that require the cutting power of scissors, CRKT offers its lightweight 5.5-inch plain utility Crossover Shears. This handy tool also features a bottle opener, lid lifter/screwdriver and grill cleaner. By the way, when you do find yourself in need of a knife, the top blade separates to become a kitchen knife.
KA-BAR is well known for its military and tactical knives, but they also provide a wide variety of hunting knives. The Game Hook features a 3.25-inch straight edge stainless-steel skinning blade topped with a gut hook to make field dressing a simple task. Other features include a stacked leather handle, aluminum butt cap, a brass guard and a leather sheath.
Camouflage makes perfect sense for hunting clothes, but for a hunting knife? If you drop it, you'll never find it! Outdoor Edge gives this knife and saw combo blaze orange rubberized Kraton handles so they can be easily seen. The Kodi-Saw features a 6-inch diamond-cut blade for quartering game or clearing thick brush. Press the lock button on the knife to quickly switch between the drop-point skinning blade and the gutting blade without removing the blade from the handle.
