Why Did 8,000 Mallards Die in South Dakota?

There have been so many mass fish and bird die-offs this winter (or at least such an increase in their media attention) that two people have written me rather creepy emails forecasting the end of the world.

Honeymooner Ditches Bride, Goes Duck Hunting

This is the story of a man so committed to duck hunting that he planned his Mexico honeymoon to coincide with flights of bluewings and cinnamons. It's a tale of bravery, logistical genius and careful manipulation of the female psyche. What you're about to read will no doubt be studied by duck hunters and psychologists for years to come.

Jim Hautman Wins 2010-2011 Duck Stamp Contest

Minnesota artist Jim Hautman has won the 2010 Federal Duck Stamp contest for a beautiful acrylic painting of a pair of white-fronted (specklebelly) geese. It is Hautman's fourth winning duck stamp, having won previously in 1989, 1994 and 1998. Incredibly, a painting submitted by Hautman's brother, Robert, was tied for first place until a tie-breaker vote was held. Robert is a two-time contest winner. Results of the contest were announced Sunday at the David Brower Center in Berkeley, Calif., during the annual competition hosted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Waterfowlers will carry Hautman's winning stamp during the 2011-2012 season.

A Bargain of a Decoy

A reader emailed to point out that I failed to note the Flambeaus shown in last week's decoy post are from the company's "Storm Front Premium" line. Flambeau also makes the new "Storm Front Classic" mallards at an opening price point. I regret not including the Classics as a budget-priced option, because they look pretty killer:

New Decoys I Can't Afford But Will Buy Anyway

You know how they say decoys are made to attract hunters, not ducks? Well, it must be guys like me who the decoy makers are after, because I end up spending a bundle every year on the newest, coolest stuff. I said I'd buy sensibly this year, but just look at the decoys pictured below. It isn't fair! Credit rating be damned, I've gotta have 'em.
