2012 Duck Stamp Winner Announced

Here's the duck stamp you'll tuck in your wallet for the 2013-2014 season. Robert Steiner of San Francisco, Calif., painted this rather stunning acrylic rendition of a common goldeneye. It's available June 2013 at your local post office or—thank goodness I can finally write this—online. A Steiner painting was previously selected for the 1998-1999 stamp, which featured a Barrow's goldeneye.

Happy Duck Stamp Day

Federal duck stamps go on sale today and, while competition for the winning artwork is always fierce, I think Joe Hautman's woodie drake is as pretty as they come. Therefore there's no better year than this to join a growing waterfowl conservation tradition: buying not just one, but two duck stamps. I like to frame one stamp, and tuck my signed stamp (the one I hunted with) inside my duck journal as a memento. It also never hurts to keep an extra duck stamp handy in case an infrequent waterfowl hunter suddenly wants to join you. Duck stamps often aren't as available as they ought to be, after all.

DU Asks Congress for Electronic Duck Stamp

Last week Ducks Unlimited testified in favor of H.R. 3117, the Permanent Electronic Duck Stamp Act of 2011, before the U.S. House of Representatives Natural Resources Committee. DU says the bill would make the stamp more accessible by providing for its online purchase. Instead of having to run to the post office, hunters would simply purchase a stamp online, print a special receipt and carry the receipt while hunting until the actual stamp arrives by mail. DU also voiced its continued support for raising the cost of the stamp from $15 to $25.

Jim Hautman Wins 2010-2011 Duck Stamp Contest

Minnesota artist Jim Hautman has won the 2010 Federal Duck Stamp contest for a beautiful acrylic painting of a pair of white-fronted (specklebelly) geese. It is Hautman's fourth winning duck stamp, having won previously in 1989, 1994 and 1998. Incredibly, a painting submitted by Hautman's brother, Robert, was tied for first place until a tie-breaker vote was held. Robert is a two-time contest winner. Results of the contest were announced Sunday at the David Brower Center in Berkeley, Calif., during the annual competition hosted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Waterfowlers will carry Hautman's winning stamp during the 2011-2012 season.
