NPS Ranger Tases Man Walking Dogs Off-Leash

I've been known to flout a leash law or two (just ask my dog), but after reading this story I might just fall into line.

Three-Legged Bird Dog Runs Off, Found a State Away

Here's a dog that knows no disability. An energetic English setter, Zip may only have three legs, but that didn't stop him from embarking on a seven-day, interstate adventure that began in New Hampshire and ended in Massachusetts.

Epic Wins & Fails of 2011

The year was full of great stories of successful and not-so-successful hunters. Here's who'll ring in the New Year with champagne and who should stick to fried coot.

He's a Pheasant, Not a "Ditch Chicken"

On paper the ring-necked pheasant shouldn't be all that tough to kill. He's a predictable fellow, feeding around the same time each morning and afternoon and rarely straying more than 800 yards from his roost. So, he's far from the most elusive bird in the uplands, and when flushed he isn't the swiftest creature either. (Though if given time to accelerate, pheasants can top out around 60 mph, just 5 mph shy of the powerful mallard.)

Dog E-Collars Disrupt French Army Communications

The French military has long been the brunt of jokes (my personal favorite: How many gears does a French tank have? One forward and three in reverse).

PETA Asks Middleton to Halt Prince's Bird Hunt

Prince William just wants to take younger brother Harry bird hunting for his 27th birthday, but PETA has called for the event's cancellation. The "animal rights" group known more for over-the-top antics than actual accomplishments has written a letter to William's wife, Princess Kate Middleton, begging her to ask the princes to stop the hunt.

Meet a Dog with World-Record Ears

As a Denver Post writer quipped, here's a dog that's "all ears." In fact, owner Jennifer Wert of Boulder, Colo., says Harbor, an 8-year-old black and tan coonhound, had to grow into them.

Why We Love Dogs

It is said that you should never insult a man’s gun or his dog. I think further emphasis ought to be on the dog. Insult a gun in the presence of its owner and he will be mildly offended. Insult his dog and you better be prepared for a roll in the dirt.

Did you know legendary wingshooting author and field-trial judge Nash Buckingham spent most of his life in a Memphis apartment? Virginia Hunting Dog Alliance Betrays Hunters

It appeared as of last week that this might be the year Virginia finally did away with its draconian ban on Sunday hunting: A bipartisan Sunday hunting bill was introduced to the senate by a northern Virginia Democrat; a pro-hunting governor was in office; and a new study found that allowing hunting on Sundays would bring $296 million and 3,927 jobs to the state.

Former Spouses Fight for Custody of Chocolate Lab

A divorcing Canadian couple who apparently share a very special kind of hate decided they couldn't agree on custody of their chocolate Lab without a judge's assistance. I say special kind of hate because, for one thing, they went to court over a dog and, for another, the judge wrote that "a high degree of animosity exists between the parties." Clearly. Talk about a serious commitment to ensuring your former lover's continued unhappiness.

It's Official: Dogs Are Smarter Than Cats

An Oxford University study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences settles an age-old argument: Dogs are indeed smarter than cats. The study suggests that animals benefit intellectually from interactions within a peer group. Over time, social species develop greater mental capacity than animals who prefer to go-it-alone.
