How Dove Season Reminds Us Who We Are

There's a feeling of fall in the air this week that's too subtle for society at large to notice, but not for us. Sure, our neighbors may note that it dipped into the low 50's during recent evenings, or that the days are shortening. But I wonder if anyone but a hunter can sense the very smell of fall riding the air. It's been on the wind for several days now, calling to us, assuring us its glorious return will soon dawn.

Our Time

Stick-and-string hunters have been out among them for a couple of weeks. A few gun seasons have gotten underway, but for much of the country hunting season starts Saturday. And by “hunting season” I mean doves. After nearly a half-century I continue to be amazed at the passion so many hunters have for a four-ounce bird. I mean it’s not like a gaudy pheasant with a long tail or a hefty honker.

The good news is that final approval for Iowa's long-awaited dove season was granted late last week. The bad news is that the Iowa Natural Resource Commission added an amendment prohibiting the use of lead ammunition when dove hunting.
