Duck Commander ExtremaPrene Chest Waders

The Duck Commanders have introduced a heavily insulated set of waders that should also prove ultra-durable. Available with 800 or 1200 grams of Thinsulate insulation, the 5mm ExtremaPrene Chest Waders feature welded seams for durability and reinforced knees and shins (for breaking ice and other waterfowl hazards).

Winchester Blind Side Ammo Expands Offerings

Based on the success of Winchester's innovative Blind Side waterfowl load, it should come as no surprise that the company is expanding the line. How? Namely by making it faster—quite a bit faster, actually. The new Winchester High Velocity Blind Side has a whopping factory-rated velocity of 1675 fps. Initial offerings will be 12-gauge only and include BB's, 1's, 2's and 6's in 3 1/2-inch, 1 3/8-ounce loads and 1's, 2's, 3's, and 6's in 3-inch, 1 1/8-ounce.

Flambeau Mallard Kit and New Wigeon Decoys

Flambeau Outdoors has unveiled the wood carvings that will be used to produce a new StormFront wigeon decoy. Based on these works of art, we have to believe that the plastic decoy versions will also impress. Like all decoys in the family, the StormFront wigeons will feature oversized keels and "UVision" paint, which mimics the reflective properties of real waterfowl feathers.

Tenzing Waterfowl Bag and Duck Strap

This display was just too cool not to share. Just one year into its existence, Tenzing Outdoors is rolling out some really innovative gear and, as you can see from the photo below, it's found unique ways to gain attention for them.

Betrayed By My Fanny Pack

My favorite late-season waders are a thick neoprene pair made by Cabela's. They fit me perfectly and, given the way I abuse gear, it's remarkable that they've lasted eight hard seasons.

Delta Waterfowl, Arkansas Senate Clarify Baiting

The scary thing about baiting laws is how easily a duck hunter can unknowingly violate one. This is not to suggest I am sympathetic to those who knowingly bait waterfowl—the book ought to be thrown at them. However, the laws also ought to be fair, uniform and easily understood. Unfortunately even in a normal year that is often not the case, and 2012 was no normal year for agriculture.

Cigarettes' One Benefit: Healthier Bird Nests

When your mother told you that "smoking is for the birds," she had no idea how right she was. According to new research, birds such as sparrows and finches are increasingly incorporating discarded cigarette butts into their nests. Why? Apparently the butts help insulate the nest, and the nicotine and other chemicals act as an insecticide against mites and other parasitic organisms. Birds have long built their nests with poisonous plants to keep them mite-free, but in major cities cigarette butts tend to be more available. Scientists in Mexico City have observed birds with as many as 48 butts woven into their nests, while the average was about 10 butts.

How to Enjoy Every Duck

Our society often puts emphasis on the idea that more is better. I don't believe that to be so, especially not as it relates to duck hunting. I'll cut to the chase: Those who think a limit of ducks is what our sport's all about are setting themselves up for failure. For one thing, it's not a reasonable goal in most regions, but most of all it blocks one's ability to appreciate and enjoy every duck bagged.

What Happened to this Mallard?

My friends and I had a pretty good duck hunt last week, and all returned home with fat mallards to eat. However, as I was preparing to pluck one of the birds, I noticed something odd: Its left foot had a split running through a digit and extending partially into the webbing. At first I thought the injury had resulted from our shooting that morning, but closer examination revealed it to be an old, healed wound. Here's a photo:

Man Arrested with Live Wild Goose in SUV

A Chicago man was concerned, to say the least, when he saw an SUV in a parking lot with a live wild goose locked in the back. So he called police, who later arrested Angel Bautista-Perez, 29, on charges of animal cruelty and possession of a migratory bird.

Fight Invasive Species: Wash Your Duck Dog

Here's a photo of me doing my best, apparently, to prevent the spread of invasive species. You see, the non-profit conservation group Wildlife Forever (WF) has launched a campaign encouraging duck hunters to wash their dogs, lest our furry mutts spread invasive aquatic species such as the dreaded zebra mussel. WF also advises proper cleaning of waders, decoys and boats prior to transportation using the "clean, drain, dry" technique.

“Red, White and Bluebill" Event Takes Vets Hunting

Dean Crom and Mike Thun, owners of Big Water Outdoors Guide Service, are the kind of American sportsmen we could use a few more of. Every year they host an event that pays tribute to our veterans by taking them duck hunting. And Crom and Thun chose a very clever name for the Green Bay diver hunt: Red, White and Bluebill.

Meet a German Shepherd Duck Dog

Eastern Shore market hunters loved the Chesapeake Bay retriever. The new breed fetched ducks all day and guarded the boat all night—just what these men needed. But perhaps they overlooked a dog that would've been even better suited to those dual roles: the German shepherd.

2012 Duck Stamp Winner Announced

Here's the duck stamp you'll tuck in your wallet for the 2013-2014 season. Robert Steiner of San Francisco, Calif., painted this rather stunning acrylic rendition of a common goldeneye. It's available June 2013 at your local post office or—thank goodness I can finally write this—online. A Steiner painting was previously selected for the 1998-1999 stamp, which featured a Barrow's goldeneye.
