The Humane Society of the United States: It's Not About Puppies & Kittens

The name makes it sound like this organization cares about animals—particularly unwanted pets—but its actions are dangerous to hunters, and consumers everywhere.

"Animal Rights" Activist's Spy Camera Shot Down

"Animal rights" activist Steve Hindi's name may sound familiar. He's the guy who was arrested a few years ago for harassing hunters by hovering his paraglider above their goose blinds. And more recently he's made headlines for using remote-controlled, flying spy cameras to film live pigeon shoots in Pennsylvania. Well, for the fourth time, Hindi alleges, participants in the shoot have shot down his spy drone.

California Bans Hunting with Hounds

Let this serve as a reminder of what we're up against: "Animal rights" activists have banned hunting bears and bobcats with hounds in the state of California. On Wednesday the bill was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown.

Calif. Senate Passes Ban on Hunting with Hounds

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) owes everything, from its occasional victories to its very existence, to lying. Consider the following: It has built up a huge war chest to push anti-hunting legislation and lawsuits by convincing donors it's affiliated with similarly named animal shelters (in reality HSUS donates just 1 percent of its budget to shelters). It led Michigan voters to confuse mourning doves with white doves. It has fought to ban the breeding of hunting dogs by lumping reputable kennels in with puppy mills.

HSUS Bill Would Ban Hunting with Hounds in Calif.

It's clear that while "animal rights" groups would ban all hunting practices if they could, they focus their attacks on what they perceive as its most controversial forms--issues in which they believe they can arouse public sympathy or even drive a wedge between hunters.

"Animal Rights" Terrorists Hit Pheasant Farm

An "animal rights" group is claiming responsibility for vandalizing a pheasant farm last week in Scio, Ore. The group, which I'm unable to name due to my "No Press for Jerks" policy, is best known for its proclivity toward violence, and is considered a domestic terrorist group by the FBI.

Who'da Thunk It?

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) announced yesterday that the gray wolf population in the five northern Rockies states increased at least 3 percent during the past year, despite state management that included hunting the reintroduced predator in Montana and Idaho. At least 1,774 wolves are living in the northern Rockies in 287 separate packs as I write this, according to the USFWS.

"Animal Rights" Activist Claims Drone Shot Down

Remember the "animal rights" wacko who used to hover his paraglider above goose blinds to intimidate hunters and scare away geese? (He was promptly arrested—there are laws against interfering with a hunt, after all.)

PETA Asks Middleton to Halt Prince's Bird Hunt

Prince William just wants to take younger brother Harry bird hunting for his 27th birthday, but PETA has called for the event's cancellation. The "animal rights" group known more for over-the-top antics than actual accomplishments has written a letter to William's wife, Princess Kate Middleton, begging her to ask the princes to stop the hunt.

Post Says These Chessies Are "Playing" with Ducks

The Metro section of yesterday's Washington Post contains one of the most unintentionally hilarious news items I've ever seen. Under the headline "Fowl play" appears a photo of a 14-week-old Chessie hungrily chasing down a farm-raised drake mallard. Below that, a 9-week-old Chessie uses its paw to pin a hen mallard and lick her head. The photos, plus some that didn't appear in print, are available online. See photos 6-11 (9 and 10 were print published.)

Did WaPo Show Media Bias Against Duck Hunters?

The Washington Post ran a Potomac River duck-hunting story yesterday that's pretty misleading (as a Potomac waterfowler, I feel qualified to make that statement).

Virginia Hunting Dog Alliance Betrays Hunters

It appeared as of last week that this might be the year Virginia finally did away with its draconian ban on Sunday hunting: A bipartisan Sunday hunting bill was introduced to the senate by a northern Virginia Democrat; a pro-hunting governor was in office; and a new study found that allowing hunting on Sundays would bring $296 million and 3,927 jobs to the state.
