Iowa Gets Dove Season, But Prohibits Lead Ammo

The good news is that final approval for Iowa's long-awaited dove season was granted late last week. The bad news is that the Iowa Natural Resource Commission added an amendment prohibiting the use of lead ammunition when dove hunting.

For Those "Other Vices"

Beretta now offers a shotshell shot glass and a shotshell humidor. Well ok then.

Why We Love Dogs

It is said that you should never insult a man’s gun or his dog. I think further emphasis ought to be on the dog. Insult a gun in the presence of its owner and he will be mildly offended. Insult his dog and you better be prepared for a roll in the dirt.

Survey: 25-percent Intend to Buy Shotguns in 2011

Over at the Pheasants Forever blogosphere, Anthony "Big Cat" Hauck notes a recent survey of sportsmen in which 25-percent said they intend to buy a shotgun in 2011.

Post Says These Chessies Are "Playing" with Ducks

The Metro section of yesterday's Washington Post contains one of the most unintentionally hilarious news items I've ever seen. Under the headline "Fowl play" appears a photo of a 14-week-old Chessie hungrily chasing down a farm-raised drake mallard. Below that, a 9-week-old Chessie uses its paw to pin a hen mallard and lick her head. The photos, plus some that didn't appear in print, are available online. See photos 6-11 (9 and 10 were print published.)

Shooting Down Breast Cancer

Ben O'Brien may be a whitetail fanatic, but he always turns down my invitations to shoot clays. In fact, I was going to give up until Federal Premium produced a limited quantity of pink Top Gun Target loads to benefit breast cancer research. If I know Ben O'Brien, he's going to head straight to the clays range, because the only things he loves more than deer hunting are charity and pretty colors:

Iowa May Finally Get Dove Hunting Season (UPDATED)

It's incredible that a state as rooted in the hunting culture as Iowa continues to deprive its sportsmen of one of the all-time greatest outdoor traditions: opening day of dove season.

Why Did 8,000 Mallards Die in South Dakota?

There have been so many mass fish and bird die-offs this winter (or at least such an increase in their media attention) that two people have written me rather creepy emails forecasting the end of the world.

Video: Shotshell Tracer Rounds for Clay Shooters

Fiocchi says its new "Chemical Tracer" shotshells are "the most advanced training aid for trap, skeet and sporting clay shooters alike--see where you are missing." I'm not sure they'll improve my shooting (I suspect I'd actually pull my head to watch the fireball screaming from my barrel), but who cares, they're just plain cool!

Honeymooner Ditches Bride, Goes Duck Hunting

This is the story of a man so committed to duck hunting that he planned his Mexico honeymoon to coincide with flights of bluewings and cinnamons. It's a tale of bravery, logistical genius and careful manipulation of the female psyche. What you're about to read will no doubt be studied by duck hunters and psychologists for years to come.

The Life of a Goose

The five geese my buddies and I decoyed on the last Saturday of the VA season included a very special bird. Look closely at the one in the middle:

TR's Fox "F" Grade Shotgun on Display in Cody, WY

The Outdoor Pressroom reports that U.S. President and NRA Life member Theodore Roosevelt's "F" Grade A.H. Fox shotgun is now on display at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyo. Last fall the gun fetched a record $862,500 at an auction held by James D. Julia, Inc. (which also auctioned Nash Buckingham's prized "Bo Whoop").

Man Shoots at Bird Indoors, Peppers Coworker

I've said it before, I'll say it again: Wingshooting is best enjoyed outside. Why do I again bring up this bit of commonsense? Because the plant manager of the Best Maid Cookie Company in River Falls, Wisc., is facing a felony charge after allegedly shooting at birds in the factory's rafters and wounding an employee in the process.

Did WaPo Show Media Bias Against Duck Hunters?

The Washington Post ran a Potomac River duck-hunting story yesterday that's pretty misleading (as a Potomac waterfowler, I feel qualified to make that statement).

Benelli Legacy 28

For young shooters and the upland hunter who carries his shotgun for miles, the Legacy is an excellent lightweight choice.
