Tales From My Father: Put That Back!

It's nigh impossible to go on a hunting trip without coming back with a few yarns to spin, and another of my favorites involves my dad and his now (long retired) Golden Retriever, Chelsea.

Betrayed By My Fanny Pack

My favorite late-season waders are a thick neoprene pair made by Cabela's. They fit me perfectly and, given the way I abuse gear, it's remarkable that they've lasted eight hard seasons.

Holiday Hunting Time

The holidays usually mean a little time away from the grind and a lot of time with relatives, which provides you with a fantastic opportunity to get out and enjoy some old fashioned family hunting time. If you've got a family like mine, it usually ends in a story, even if the hunt isn't all that successful.

Animal Control Breaks Up Whitetail/Dog Odd Couple

Dogs have long been accepted as man's best friend, but they're pretty social creatures—they can get along with a lot of different species, given time. Locals in Kansas City, Mo., got a glimpse of that first hand this fall when a local stray befriended the neighborhood whitetail, according to this report from The Kansas City Star.

Emergency Dumb Poachers: Deer Wakes Up On Way Home

I normally only try to do dumb poacher recaps about once a season or so, but this story out of California was both unfortunate and unusual enough to warrant its own post.

Deer Attacks Men, Steals Cigarettes

I'm admittedly a few days late to the party on this one, but the holiday season will do that to you. According to a report from NBC affiliate KETK, a deer recently attacked two men—and then added a little insult to injury by swiping their cigarettes.

Black Bear or Bigfoot?

The forest can hide its share of surprises, and a group of hikers in Utah learned just that last week. In this video, posted to YouTube on Oct. 30, a hiker and his companion appear to be observing a bear in Provo Canyon. When the furry beast realizes its not alone, however, it stands up—revealing a form that's more than enough to scare the upstart camera crew away at a sprint.

Deer Don't Like Windows

Whether you attribute it to a shrinking habitat, illness or just sheer dumb luck, this is an absolute: Deer don't like windows. Here are five stories of out-of-place whitetails smashing glass from the last week alone.

Tales From My Father: Emergency TP

I’ve heard plenty of funny hunting stories over the years, but one of my personal favorites comes from my Dad, set a year so before I was even born and just after my parents had moved in together.

Wade Like a Real Man

By Matt Coffey

I needed a pair of waders. It was that simple. The water was so cold it made me feel like I had been digging in the ice-cold beer cooler at a weekend barbecue for more than five minutes with my feet (gross, I know, but follow me here), only I didn’t come away with a frothy beverage—just cold feet. I thought I could simply wet wade the glacially temperate stream in east Tennessee, but like most men, my ego carries a lot more weight than my actual “manhood.”

Dumb Poacher Stories: Sept. 2012 Edition

Different seasons have opened around the country, and the rest of the fall and winter seasons are just around the corner. Sadly, another crop of those pesky poachers will be rearing their ugly heads again this year. Until then, though, enjoy catching up on the plights of some of the poaching world's least intelligent members from this past spring and summer.

Photos: Coonhound Really Knows How to "Stay"

As J.R. Absher of The Outdoor Pressroom put it, Maddie the coonhound has "refined the meaning of 'stay'." Since acquiring Maddie from the Cobb County Animal Shelter in Atlanta, Ga., owner Theron Humphrey has photographed her in a variety of, shall we say, interesting places—inside a tractor tire in Cedar Creek, Texas, atop a traffic light in Austin, Texas, on a bird house in Lawrence, Kan., and even above a basketball rim in Des Moines, Iowa, to name a few.
