Tales From My Father: Put That Back!

It's nigh impossible to go on a hunting trip without coming back with a few yarns to spin, and another of my favorites involves my dad and his now (long retired) Golden Retriever, Chelsea.

SportDog Bird Launcher

Remember the days when dog trainers triggered their loud, clunky bird launchers by tugging a string? The technology of sending a pigeon or quail aloft has vastly improved, and a new bird launcher by SportDog Brand is on the cutting edge. It's quiet, it's reliable and it's triggered by a remote transmitter from up to a half-mile away.

Boone (Part 1)

It has been 20 years since Boone and I took our last walk together and I laid her to rest under a south-facing oak tree. In many ways it seems like it was just yesterday when I reached down between my feet as I sat in an old lawn chair in the breeder’s backyard and picked up a double-fist-sized bundle of orange and white fur that had chosen me to cuddle up to, away from her raucous littermates.

Animal Control Breaks Up Whitetail/Dog Odd Couple

Dogs have long been accepted as man's best friend, but they're pretty social creatures—they can get along with a lot of different species, given time. Fight Invasive Species: Wash Your Duck Dog

Here's a photo of me doing my best, apparently, to prevent the spread of invasive species. You see, the non-profit conservation group Wildlife Forever (WF) has launched a campaign encouraging duck hunters to wash their dogs, lest our furry mutts spread invasive aquatic species such as the dreaded zebra mussel. WF also advises proper cleaning of waders, decoys and boats prior to transportation using the "clean, drain, dry" technique.

Late Dog Leaves Gift of 10 Puppies

There's a popular sentiment among human beings that "everything happens for a reason." Some believe a higher power is at the wheel, yet even the occasional atheist will acknowledge that life can sometimes seem engineered. All I know is there have been some incredible coincidences in my life—some happy, some sad, some a little bit of both—that my heart tells me were more than just chance.

Letter to a Dog

Dear Freedom,

A friend of mine says good dogs and bad pheasants both spend eternity in the same place. If that’s the case, then I’m sure you’re giving those roosters hell.

Meet a German Shepherd Duck Dog

Eastern Shore market hunters loved the Chesapeake Bay retriever. The new breed fetched ducks all day and guarded the boat all night—just what these men needed. But perhaps they overlooked a dog that would've been even better suited to those dual roles: the German shepherd.

Your Dog's Worst Fear: The Cone of Shame

A few days ago, my springer, Freedom, had minor surgery. Nothing serious. He basically had a wart removed from his left front leg. And all was going just fine, that is, until the veterinarian uttered the words dreaded by both man and dog: "We've fitted your dog with a cone, which he'll need to wear for the next two weeks."
