Has Wet Spring Harmed South Dakota Pheasants?

The record-breaking moisture that soaked the Midwest through the spring and summer may have been a boon to nesting waterfowl, but heavy precipitation can be a serious detriment to pheasant populations. Therefore, many hunters aren't just asking whether South Dakota's annual pheasant brood survey count will reveal a drop in numbers, but by how much.

Man Shoots at Bird Indoors, Peppers Coworker

I've said it before, I'll say it again: Wingshooting is best enjoyed outside. Why do I again bring up this bit of commonsense? Because the plant manager of the Best Maid Cookie Company in River Falls, Wisc., is facing a felony charge after allegedly shooting at birds in the factory's rafters and wounding an employee in the process.

Who Will Bag the Million Dollar Pheasant?

I'm sure you don't need another reason to hunt pheasants in South Dakota (quick aside: if one more outdoor writer refers to S.D. as "ringneck mecca" or "the pheasant capital of the world," I will surely gag). However, if you do, get this: the Aberdeen Convention and Visitors Bureau has banded and released 100 pheasants in Brown County, S.D., one of which carries a band worth $1 million! According to the contest rules, all banded birds are worth at least $100-$500 and will automatically be entered into a drawing to determine the million-dollar winner.

How to Determine a Pheasant's Age

Pheasants Forever's Anthony Hauck takes some of the guesswork out of determining the age of the pheasant you just killed in his latest post. I say "some" of the guesswork because aging roosters is still an inexact science.

Finally Some Good News for CRP

The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is still on shaky ground, but after many setbacks it's finally gotten some good news: The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture has acquired $2 billion for CRP by renegotiating crop insurance contracts. It's not a permanent solution to the key problems dogging the program (ethanol production comes to mind), but it'll certainly help.

How to Make a Pheasant Habitat

Plenty's been written about whitetail food plots, but what's a guy with 40 acres who wants to groom it for pheasants supposed to do? It's a topic I consider frequently, because frankly I'd rather have upland game than big bucks on my property.

Who's Your Fav Pheasant Writer?

Pheasants Forever asks "Who is your favorite pheasant hunting journalist?" on its Facebook page. So far the late Gene Hill, who happens to be my favorite writer, is in the lead. I trail with zero votes.
