From concerns over loss of prairie habitat to alarmingly low roadside survey numbers, it's been a bad news cycle for the ring-necked pheasant. A recent report out of Minnesota, though, offers some hope.

Would Proposed Coyote Control Impact SD Pheasants?

South Dakota wildlife managers say the state's coyote population has continued to increase, despite attempts to control it. British Army's Spaniel Awarded Posthumous Medal

We all have our favorite breeds, and many times we're especially proud of the versatility they offer. So, he's far from the most elusive bird in the uplands, and when flushed he isn't the swiftest creature either. (Though if given time to accelerate, pheasants can top out around 60 mph, just 5 mph shy of the powerful mallard.)

Has Wet Spring Harmed South Dakota Pheasants?

The record-breaking moisture that soaked the Midwest through the spring and summer may have been a boon to nesting waterfowl, but heavy precipitation can be a serious detriment to pheasant populations. Therefore, many hunters aren't just asking whether South Dakota's annual pheasant brood survey count will reveal a drop in numbers, but by how much.
