Birdsongs (Page 2)

A weighty bag of various gamebirds provides inspiration to a band of hunters.

Of course nearly any No. 6, 7.5 or 8 shotshell will fold a bird like a lawn chair, but if I’m planning an expensive hunt, I don’t skimp on its cheapest aspect. Several years ago Federal launched a specialized shell for upland birds. Prairie Storm is a mixed-pellet load featuring 70 percent tried-and-true copper-plated lead, 30 percent nickel-plated FliteStopper lead and its revolutionary FliteControl wad that holds them together for longer distances. The FS pellet features a circular belt that’s touted to cut on contact; because it doesn’t fly as consistently as the plated pellets, it fills the fringes of the spread. The result is a wicked pattern at all shotgun ranges for outstanding overall performance on birds. As a bonus to hunters, a portion of profit from each box will go to Pheasants Forever.
