Northeastern Minnesota

Good hunting is expected this year in the Superior National Forest, including its famous Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Minnesota's fabled and sprawling St. Louis County runs from Duluth to the Canadian border. Together with Lake County to its east, the area is coming off a crippling winter that killed many deer. Although not as harsh as the notorious winters that crushed the herds in the mid-'90s, this past winter gave deer their toughest test of the new century. This follows the 2007-08 winter, which also cut into the herd and caused a 20 percent lower kill in fall 2008.

St. Louis County has produced a state-high 18 Boone and Crockett book bucks since the big killer winter of 1995-96. And good hunting is expected this year in the Superior National Forest, including its famous Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The best deer numbers-18 to 25 deer per square mile-are on the county's western side in the Orr, Cook and Vermillion Lake area. Winter took a greater toll to the north and east.
