Here's how Canada's population stacks up....

2009 Elk Forecast: Northeast U.S.
Among this look at forecasts from top states and provinces for total elk populations, the Norhteastern U.S. doesn't have much to brag about. Pennslyvania remains the lone state studied and there aren't many tags to go around. But keep your heads up on the east coast, you can always take a trip out west. What fun is a backyard elk hunt anyway?....

2009 Elk Forecast: Southeast U.S.
Andy Miller, a businessman from Franklin, Tenn., made the winning bid last week on the final Tennessee Special Elk Take Permit. Miller conquered some 31 bidders for the final tag on eBAy with an offer of $17,700. This permit is one of five bull elk tags issued to sportsmen for Tennessee's 2009 Season. So look elsewhere, unless you have very deep pockets....

Although some states have limited herds, the elk population in the Midwest gives you a host of options, from Kansas to North Dakota....

For elk hunters, New Mexico lives up to its nickname, "Land of Enchantment." "We have great opportunity to hunt elk in unique habitat with potential for big bulls," says Stewart Liley, the state's elk program coordinator. What more could a hunter want?....
