First NRA Weekend at Cabela's Successful

A positive reaction from the NRA membership coupled with a feeling success on both sides seems to have ensured a similar event in the near future.

More than 3,300 members signed up or renewed their NRA membership during the NRA Weekend at Cabela's in early February, and the event is being heralded as a resounding success.

"The feedback we've received from our recruiters in the stores has been very positive," said NRA Director of Membership Programs Jeff Poole. "The Cabela's staff was very helpful in promoting the membership opportunities in the store during the weekend, and current members were very excited to take advantage of this unexpected benefit of their membership."

From Fri., Feb. 5, through Sun., Feb. 7, Cabela's offered NRA members exclusive deals in 29 nationwide retail locations and hosted NRA volunteers who helped the membership drive.

Members received a 10-percent discount on all in-store purchases with the clip-and-save coupon found in American Hunter or American Rifleman magazines. Through the Cabela's NRA YHEC Endowment Add-A-Buck initiative, customers could also add $1 or more to purchases, with the proceeds going to YHEC. Cabela's will match the funds raised for the endowment up to $35,000.

"We estimated over 150 new memberships and at least 30 renewals over the weekend," said Steve Lonn, retail event coordinator for the Cabela's store in Rogers, Minn. "I believe that was the highest number of new memberships in the Eastern region."

While it was smooth sailing for most locations, a few stores in the mid-Atlantic battled some of the most prolific winter weather in decades throughout the weekend.

"The biggest problem we had was mother nature gave us a taste of winter on the weekend, so we extended the NRA discount until Wednesday," said Bruce Biedenharn, General Manager of the Hamburg, Pa., Cabela's store. "I was disappointed that we could not see the full potential of this event, but I am sure we will do it again."

NRA members who were unable to make it out to stores were still able to shop online at or call 800-237-4444 to receive free shipping on purchases of $50 or more during the event dates.

A positive reaction from the NRA membership coupled with a feeling success on both sides seems to have ensured that members will be enjoying these benefits again in the near future.

"We're already working with Cabela's to repeat this special weekend at some point," Poole said. "It is a valuable partnership."

I had called the NRA 2 months ago making this suggestion I am glad it happened. Let's keep this activity up. I suggest doing this at Dunhams and all other local sports stores.
