Ohio turkey hunters experienced an impressive opening day this season, bagging a preliminary total of 2,874 bearded birds. The Ohio turkey season is open statewide through the 16th of May.

This year’s opening day total is 68 percent higher than last year’s opening day due to several factors such as weather—last year it poured, while this year it was a perfectly clear day—and the emergence of cicadas since 2008, which serve as an excellent source of protein for turkeys. This protein-rich diet leads to plenty of strong birds to be hunted.

In the first week, hunters have taken over 11,000 birds, while only 9,000 were taken in the first week of last season.
