The Ultimate Man’s Survival Guide was a New York Times Best Seller in 2009, but now it’s out as a more affordable paperback with new chapters and illustrations. Nothing has been cut, only added. It is still a must-have guide on how to hunt, fish, shoot, survive in the wild, be a hero and everything else a man should know.

Now a new chapter titled “Romantic” actually answers the age-old riddle, “What do women want?” Miniter interviewed a lot of successful women to answer the question. I won’t even try to summarize his answer; I’ll just say it’ll have you laughing even as you toss your head wishing you had this advice long ago. The other new chapter is “Pal.” Studies show we’re losing our hunting buddies and more. After explaining why—and drawing advice from Cicero, C.S. Lewis and even today’s armed forces—Miniter cuts through the politically correct attacks on masculinity and shows what we’re often missing today, how friendship must be about something other than a person or a past. To really understand that and find revealing accounts of man’s greatest friendships and other camaraderie, check out this new chapter.

Of course, I have always found much to like in The Ultimate Man’s Survival Guide. Miniter found experts to show how to smoke a cigar, how to defend oneself (with tips from UFC champ Matt Hughes), how to fight off a bear, how to toss a football, how to run with the bulls (tips from legendary bull runner Juan Macho), what the greatest codes of honor are and how they can apply to our lives today and so much more. I especially enjoy his list of the 100 movies every man should see and the 100 books every man should read. Now with these two chapters this book is complete. You’ll want one for yourself, and then you’ll want to give copies to your sons, grandsons and yes, daughters and granddaughters.
