I think the naming of any blog is probably the most crucial part of its creation. So much goes into a name. Who I am, who I think you might want me to be, what you can expect to read and just how clever, informative and/or funny I can be.
Not too long ago I sat down with a few of my fellow NRA staffers to come up with the name for this blog. Of course, those in the room that really know me were well aware of the strange road that particular creative process was about to take them down. I had visions of a blog that would be timely, informative and would show off everything I have ever learned or will ever know about whitetail hunting. This, I thought, will be a tough mountain to climb.
We started by listing the industry bloggers whose titles caught my eye like Fear and Loading by our own Guy Sagi; Dogs, Shotguns and Other Vices by Kyle Wintersteen, American Headline Hunter by Jeff Johnston and This Is My Job by Tyler Kreis.
All good titles, good writers and, consequently, good blogs. But mine had to be better.
The conversation flowed toward the cinema greats with suggestions like Terms of En-Deer-ment, The Whitetail Whisperer, Requiem for a Deer, How to Lose a Deer in Ten Days, The Curious Case of Benjamin O'Brien, Little Mr. Whitetail, Planet of the Deers (bad grammar), Dawn of the Deer and last but not least, Butch Cassidy and the Whitetail Kid.
All good suggestions, but nothing quite caught my ear.
Then, it came to me. The only way to match up my grand blogging ideas with those of the readers who will actually do the clicking is to let you choose. So, I ran the idea by the powers that be in NRA Publications, and they gave me the go-ahead to start the search.
The only rules in this contest are that the title must contain "deer" or "whitetail." That's it, no other constraints.
I'm just a 24-year-old assistant editor who grew up on deer hunting, has a passion for fair chase and a need for a blog name.

The top five suggestions will be selected and a poll will be posted to sort out the best of those five. Winner will receive an American Hunter button-up shirt and a never-ending connection with this blog. Good luck.
