Hurricane Season Bow Hunt, Day 3

Hurricane Season Bow Hunt, Day 3

11/21/2009

By Tyler Kreis

Day 3, 4:33 a.m.
The alarm wasn’t needed this morning.  The howling winds sound like we’re starring in a horror film.  It’s cold, it’s windy, but at least it’s not raining today.  We flipped a coin and I get to hunt while Ben films me. We’re both pretty optimistic about today, since it’s the first rainless moment in what seems like an eternity.

Day 3, 9:05 a.m.
We’re still sitting in the stand, frozen and numb from the 45 mph wind gusts and the 42 degree temperature, but our spirits are still high because today could be the day.  So far we haven’t seen anything, but it’s the rut, things can change at any time. We've been encouraged by some of the fresh scrapes we spotted on the way in, and we know that there are some 180 class whitetails around here—maybe bigger.

Day 3, 10:52 a.m.
We were busy trying to fight off the cold and boredom when a nice shooter buck came storming in our direction stalking a hot doe. I grabbed my bow, but Ben wasn't quite on the deer just yet. The mainframe eight point worked around to our right following that doe head down, nose up with about 2 inches of space between nose and tail.

While waiting for my opportunity, I drew back, but he snuck behind a tree that was blocking Ben's angle and he was out of frame. But it was the only shot I had, and I needed to make that split second decision. I took the shot at about 30 yards as the buck trotted into my sight path—a miss—I rushed it, he was moving too fast.  I tried to stop him, but his mind was on other things at that moment. I hate this feeling, he was right there, we couldn’t have asked for a better set up.  If only he would have stopped...

Day 3, 11:30 a.m.

After setting up the new Block Fusion target back at camp and letting some Rage two blade 100-grain slip cam Broadheads (Ben) and RedHead Blackout expandables (Me) fly, we were ready to head back out for the rest of the afternoon. It's always good to regroup and regain your confidence after an encounter like this morning's, that's for sure. For the afternoon hunt , Ben and I are splitting up.  He’s going to check out a spot where we’ve been seeing a lot of deer. Let’s see if we can increase our odds by trying to get deeper in the woods.
